Retired attorney Donald Smith Jr. has become an advocate for Berks County’s evicted tenants

Eviction is an issue Smith took interest in several years ago after reading the book “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City” by Matthew Desmond. “Matthew Desmond makes a point that instead of thinking evictions are caused by poverty, think of it in a sense that the eviction process actually causes poverty,” Smith said. “They become blacklisted in many ways, and they bounce around from house to house and apartment to apartment. Does that really benefit the overall economy to have that number of impoverished people? I don’t think so.”
